Following his father's early death, his mother oversaw the estate until Stuart pursued higher education at institutions including Harvard College, though he left without graduating. His true passion for art flourished during his time in Massachusetts, where he diligently copied plaster casts and paintings at the Boston Athenæum. Recommended by a political connection to Joseph Ames, Stuart began formal training under the artist's guidance. Seeking further refinement, he traveled to Europe with a cousin, studying at academies in Karlsruhe and Munich within the Grand Duchy of Baden. Under the tutelage of Ludwig des Coudres, he honed his skills before returning to America just as the nation teetered on the brink of civil war.

Civil War Service and Personal Tragedy

Upon the outbreak of the American Civil War, Stuart abandoned his European studies to join the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery in defense of South Carolina. His military career saw fluctuating ranks, from sergeant after the Battle of Port Royal to corporal during a regimental reorganization, while also serving on detached engineering missions. He fought in significant engagements including Pocotaligo, the raid on Pinckney Island, and the Battles of Honey Hill, Averasborough, and Bentonville. The conflict proved devastating for Stuart personally; he lost two brothers, Allan and Henry, to combat wounds. He married twice, raising four children with his second wife, Theodora Tappan Stuart.
